9.11.01 NEVER FORGET

Even though the target that day was the World Trade Center, ultimately the target is liberty.

Five years later, I think of the words of the song "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood.

Specifically, "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free".

Because five years later it seems like neither part of that line is more true today than it was five years ago.

And that's a shame.

And it seems like we've forgotten about the sacrifice of the true heroes, the cops and firemen and soldiers in the midst of partisan bickering.

"And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me."

And that's a shame.

And it seems like we've forgotten the part of unity that makes this the United States of America.

"And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today."

And that's a shame.

And it seems like we've forgotten about the love of country and love of God that made America great.

"Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A."

And that's a shame.

And it's amazing that we can so easily remember the words of this great song and sing it so freely and easily at certain times, but not understand or remember the true meaning of the words that make it such a great and beautiful song.

And that's a shame.

Hopefully it doesn't take another tragedy for us to realize what made US great and keep it in our hearts every day.
