The situation: Since April 19, the Padres have either led the NL West or been within one game of first. Their lead over the Giants is now 2.5 games and they have a chance to tighten their grip on their claim with a three-game series at AT&T Park.

San Diego has absolutely dominated the Giants this season, going 7-1 over the first eight meetings this season. The rivalry has been a lot closer than the results indicate, however. Four of the Padres' seven wins were of the one-run variety, including two 1-0 wins. (Both 1-0 games were started by Mat Latos(notes) and Jonathan Sanchez(notes).)

Will Sanchez back up his guarantee?: The lefty has had enough after being a hard-luck loser in two of his first three starts against the Padres this season (including taking a 'L' after throwing a one-hitter on April 21). He guarantees that the Giants will sweep this weekend's series and take control of first place for the first time since a brief stay on May 6.

"We're going to play San Diego, and we're going to beat them three times," Sanchez told MLB.com. "If we get to first place, we're not going to look back."

The results: Giants lose two out of three to the Padres, led off by another one-run loss by our fearless prognosticator, Jonathan Sanchez. It's really not cool to talk smack and then not back it up. It just looks foolish. Every time.
