Vogelsong: “I didn’t want to let these guys down. I didn’t want to let the city down.” | Giants Extra

Vogelsong would have been my second choice for MVP and this article highlights some of the reasons why. He fed off the Zito start and then Cain feeds off Vogie's start.

These guys personify TEAM -- the total ends up being greater than the sum of the parts. Team chemistry -- every team looks for it and talks about it -- these guys have found it. I know it's easier to talk about when you win, but I felt good about this scenario playing out when they were down 3-1. I just wasn't sure if Zito or Lincecum was going to bridge the gap to the big two.

Again, if you had told me before the playoff that Lincecum and Bumgarner would be arguably the two most ineffective Giants starters, I would have been a little worried. But somehow, it works. Good chemistry will do that.

Scutaro said the first thing that stuck out about Vogelsong was his work ethic.

“Every time I walk by the gym this guy is in there working out,” Scutaro said. “I was like, hey, bro — he has a lot of energy.”

On Sunday that energy was focused on the Cardinals and an endless stream of vicious bites on a piece of gum. Vogelsong was intense throughout but made it look easy, the result of all that hard work.

“My dad kind of raised me that way,” Vogelsong said. “When I came into this game, everybody kind of said ‘Don’t let that be the reason why you don’t succeed.’ I just decided I was going to do everything I could off the field to prepare myself for the games.”
