Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reported (via Twitter) this morning that the Giants have signed (minor league deal) outfielder Jeff Francoeur. The 29-year-old Francoeur was recently released by the Royals after hitting .208 with 3 homers in 59 games this season. He will report to the Fresno Grizzlies.

Francoeur is a career .264 hitter and averages 19 homers a year. He should still have a lot of juice in his tank since he’s only 29-years-old. Let’s hope a change of scenery is all he needs to get back on track!

A 29-year old, who just washed out of Kansas City, hoping for a change of scenery to revive his career, is now the Giants season saver?

This leaves silent the question of why a 29-year old outfielder -- who should be entering the prime of his career -- washing out of Kansas City in the first place?

The worse the Giants do, the chances diminish that general manager Brian Sabean will make a trade to improve the team.

The Giants lost 10-6 to the Mets on Tuesday to drop a season-high nine games below .500 (40-49).

If the defending champs were at .500, Sabean would be more compelled to try upgrading the team, he said. However, with the Giants buried in last place in the National League West and showing no signs of recovery, Sabean said it wouldn't be wise to move ahead with trades.

Making deals would mean giving up prospects for established players, and management's belief is that another player or two wouldn't make much of a dent in the standings.

Sabean has told several media outlets that the current group of players needs to show a lot more for him to make trades that would put the team over the top. Instead, the GM will settle for smaller moves, including one he made Tuesday -- signing veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a minor league deal.
