San Francisco Giants 2009 Draft Results | SFGiants.com:

I think we can close the books and ring the cash register on the Giants 2009 draft at this point. Clearly not as fruitful as the 2008 version that produced Buster Posey, Conor Gillaspie (oops!!), Roger Kieschnick and Brandon Crawford, to say nothing lesser for Eric Surkamo in the 6th round and Juan Perez in the 13th round.

Whew!!! that was a good draft.

The 2009 version would stand on its own if Zack Wheeler was still here and Brandon Belt actually signed ( oh yeah he did!! ) and stays healthy and prospers. The rest of the crop looks played out, although Chris Dominguez could become a late bloomer somewhere.

Tommy Joseph may end up continuing a recent trend in this organization of failed HS hitters, albeit still a small sample. And maybe that is what my gripe may be in the future, not that the Giants cannot develop hitters per se, but that they may have have an inability to either scout and project the younger HS hitters or develop the ones they do select. They have had better luck with the supposed, lower ceiling WYSIWYG ( What you see is what you get ) college hitters like Posey Belt and Crwaford and their International signings.

If you tell me they are "developing" hitters in the mold of Pablo Sandoval I'm just going to scream, but there again, comparing apples and oranges.

And please don't anybody turn this post into a reprisal of the mush headed Domincan statement from way back because if I was in the player development department and you brought me a young Hunter Pence, I would probably try to change almost everything about him as a hitter as well, except the results.

Some guys you just have to throw the book away.

The Incredible Hunter Pence:
