This move was likely made easier by the recent strong showing by Daniel Carbonnel and perhaps Justin Maxwell. There just wasn't any room for Brown. Some reports in the past indicated that Brown was resistant to changes that the Giants hitting coaches wanted to see him make. He may now be more open to making those change with a new organization.

Giants' former top pick Gary Brown claimed by Cardinals - San Jose Mercury News:
SAN FRANCISCO -- One-time top outfield prospect Gary Brown was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday after being designated for assignment by the Giants earlier this week.

Brown, now 26, was San Francisco's 2010 amateur draft first-round pick and a former top 100 prospect. but after a fast start in the minors, his numbers deteriorated as he advanced through the system and he has never really come close to breaking through to the majors, even though he was a September call-up in 2014

Brown hit .271 with 36 stolen bases in his second season at Triple-A Fresno in 2014, but hit just .154 ( 6 for 39) during spring training this year with a home run and three steals.
