Giants deal for Fontenot....more spackling paste
To provide insurance for the seemingly endless trips to the DL that Renteria and Sanchez make, the Giants acquired versatile IF Mike Fontenot from the visiting Cubs for Lo-A OF prospect Evan Crawford.
A good pick up here. Fontenot is not highly paid, can be productive for extended periods of time and can play all around the IF. He is a lefty bat with a career avg. line of (8-51-.269) with a .338 OBP and .757 OPS, a decidedly middle of the road player. He does strike out a bit much for a middle IF with a ~ 20% K-Rate.
Evan Crawford did not make a real impact on any prospect lists to date, hitting .255-4-29 in Lo-A Augusta this year. He has some speed (24 SB) but strikes out a lot (108K vs. 35 BB).
Again, as fits the pattern with the Giants, a deal that is putting spackling paste and paint over the holes punched in the roster wall due to the lack of durability of the highly paid signings that are Renteria, Sanchez, DeRosa, Rowand.
