Giants select Georgia Tech star Joey Bart No. 2 overall

Image result for joey bart

Power arm, power bat at a premium defensive position. Not a need pick by any means, but a good building block who gives the team some future flexibility to move a piece or two for pitching.

I guess we may not see as much of Nick Hundley in the future as we might have liked. He was really starting to make his mark on this team, as if the Willie McCovey Award wasn't enough.

This is a solid pick at the #2 sport, where you really can't afford to make a mistake.

Giants select Georgia Tech star Joey Bart No. 2 overall

With the second pick in the 2018 MLB amateur draft, the San Francisco Giants selected Georgia Tech star Joey Bart, a power-hitting catcher recently dubbed Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.
Bart joins a weak Giants farm system with just one other catcher - Aramis Garcia - anywhere near the top. Now, Bart is the likely heir to Buster Posey who, at 31 years old, slots in at first base with growing frequency. Coincidentally, Bart's player comparison was Posey himself, according to MLB Network.
From Buford, Ga., Bart was previously selected out of high school in the 27th round by the Tampa Bay Rays but went unsigned to attend Georgia Tech. Last season, the 21-year-old backstop led the ACC in batting average, slugging, and hits. He became the first ACC Player of the Year out of Georgia since Mark Teixeira.

Nick Hundley hits walk-off 2-run single

Image result for PAddling a leaking boat

The Giants finish the month 15-14, over .500 mark, which is good for their confidence as they continue to paddle a boat made leaky by injuries.

from mlb.com
Nick Hundley hits walk-off 2-run single:
UP NEXT Giants rookie Andrew Suarez will receive his second career big league start in Tuesday's 7:15 p.m. PT encounter against the Padres and right-hander Tyson Ross. Suarez showed promise in his April 11 Major League debut against Arizona, allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings but striking out seven while walking none.
Chris Haft has covered the Giants since 2005, and for MLB.com since 2007.
'via Blog this'

This is the most telling statistic in the story:
The decision lifted the Giants over .500 (15-14) for the first time since the end of the 2016 season.
D.J. Snelten continues to do well and it's good to see Andrew Suarez get another opportunity tonight.

There are so many guys that fall in the category "What are you going to do with...." that it's hard to keep track of sometimes.
  • Sam Dyson and now Cory Gearin in the bullpen. Josh Osich when he gets off the DL for that matter.
  • Hunter Pence .172 almost a negative OPS+.
  • Brandon Crawford .189 and falling by the day. Same near negative OPS+
  • Negative OPS+ is pitchers as hitters territory.
Hanson has filled in well at 2B, sam with Slater, but I still would like to see Panik and Williamson back ASAP, especially Williamson. His injury has eerie similarities to Jarret Parker running into the wall and never really coming back the same.

I think I could get comfortable with a  starting staff of Bum, Cueto, Shark, Stratton and Blach with Suarez and Beede knocking on the door. If Will Smith can get back to speed quickly and Snelten can keep performing well in spots, the bullpen could solidify although the need Gearrin back and Moronta to stay steady on the RH side of the ledger.

Keep paddling boys. help is on the way. (I hope)

Giants re-sign Nick Hundley

Hundley Image

I really didn't like him that much when he was with the Rockies, he always seemed to find a way to hurt the Gigantes. The fact that he won the Willie Mac award in his first year with the team shows the impact his leadership and spirit had on teammates. This is a good re-sign. Hopefully, he sticks around for longer than one more year.

The Giants seem to want to lavish more riches and security on guys that haven't done a lick for the franchise, rather than for those who have been around for a while.

That dynamic really has to change and fast. Congrats to Nick Hundley.
