WAIT.....WHAT!?!?

Reportedly because the two parties couldn't agree on a call-up date after signing a minor-league deal?
How about IF on the old call-up date there partner, not WHEN? 
Have you seen the back of your baseball card lately champ? It's not real pretty.
I mean, you're Ted Lilly.....that used to mean something.

Well, there goes the season. Everything that I wrote in the previous post still stands; Lilly is still the type of player the Giants should poke around at in the offseason. But they won't get the free 30-day trial to find out. The Giants probably didn't want to give their credit-card number and risk getting an auto-renewal subscription.

So until further notice, please remember that Ted Lilly has always kind of been a dillweed, and we never liked him in the first place. Best of luck on the Long Island Ducks, pal.

Although lately it seems as if the Giants are leading the majors in jiltings. Oh well, life goes on.

Maybe the Giants have a case of organizational halitosis. Jilted by Ted Lilly.......can the season get any worse?

According to the Mercury News, the call-up date may not have been the reason for the breakdown.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, who initially reported that the Giants had reached an agreement on a minor-league deal, now saying the deal has fallen through, at least for now. According to Cotillo’s source, Lilly and the Giants could not agree on a call-up date. That news probably gets Giants fans more excited than the alleged signing.

Giants PR man Jim Moorehead just passed along this quote from Giants assistant G.M. Bobby Evans: “Upon reviewing Ted Lilly’s medical history, we will hold off on pursuing a minor-league contract right now.”

On nearly signing Lilly: “Yeah, they were close. I think it was pretty much done pending the physical and there were some concerns there.”

The thought on signing Lilly: “We were in a situation where we were going to get a look at him in Fresno (Lilly’s home area), a few starts to see where he was at physically and his stuff. It was basically a free look to see where he was at. We’re talking about an experienced major-league pitcher who’s had a real nice career. The timing made sense for us. Unfortunately, with the physical, it’s not going to happen.”

If this is tit for tat for the Dodgers signing of Brian Wilson, I think the Dodgers benefit more. This is a fairly low-risk move for the Giants for this year, Lilly can plug some innings in relief or in spot starts down the stretch. Long-term? I'm really not sure there is a long-term there.

The Giants have signed lefty Ted Lilly, reports Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.  MLBTR has confirmed the minor league deal, which is pending a physical.  Lilly, 37, was designated for assignment by the Dodgers last month and released a few days ago.  The Dodgers are on the hook for the remaining $3.7MM or so on his contract, less the prorated portion of the league minimum of Lilly returns to the Majors with San Francisco.  Lilly is represented by Larry O'Brien of Full Circle Sports Management.

LILLY PICKS UP WHERE ZAMBRANO LEFT OFF

Ted Lilly follows Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter with six near-perfect innings to start the game, before giving up a hit (or two?) in the seventh, this afternoon in Milwaukee. Lance Berkman walked in the second, and was promptly picked off by Lilly. Reggie Abercrombie led off the seventh with a ??-able error scored on Aramis Ramirez. Mark Loretta followed with a clean single to right-center to end the no-hit bid.

This would be the only hit the Astros would get in this two game set in Milwaukee, as Carlos Marmol, Jeff Samarzia and Bobby Howry would combine to shut the 'stros down the rest of the way, preserving the one-hitter.

If Lilly had been able to finish the deal, it would have been the first time no-hitters have been twirled by pitchers from the same team in back-to-back games.

The Giants Gaylord Perry and the Cardinals Ray Washburn combined to pitch back to back no-no's in the same series, but for separate teams.

These two games were laden with controversy as the Reggie Abercrombie hit that was scored an error brought back memories of the questionable scoring call that went against C.C. Sabathia in Pittsburgh and cost him a chance at a no-hitter. Today, Lilly was given a questionable second life, which Loretta would later turn into a moot point. But it seems like rarely does a game go by that a scoring decision isn't dripping with home-cooking. Something needs to be done about that situation. It's turning into a bit of a joke. There was a blind fan in Section 103 screaming at the press-box that it was a hit, that's how bad the scoring was.

The old school maxim that the first hit has to be a clean one was stretched to the absolute limit today.

The second questionable item was the propriety of moving the game from Houston to Milwaukee in the first place. The Astros were are competing directly with the Brewers for the wild-card spot, so in fairness to the Astros, you would think the game could have been played somewhere other than the Cubs backyard.

By the way, in case your scoring at home, Sundays game drew 23,441 and this afternoons matinee managed to pack in 15,158 otherwise unoccupied Cubs fans. The two-game average of 19,300 is right about the Rays regularly-scheduled game average.

Considering these were unscheduled games, moved into a division rivals stadium, with a fan base that has it's own local flooding problems due to the weekend hurricanes, that's fan support the Cubs can be proud of.

Maybe that's why the Commish moved the games here. Another chance to ring the register. HAHAHAHA.
