San Francisco Giants defeated by Colorado Rockies 8–6, despite late inning rally | Around the Foghorn

This has been a common theme with Hudson since maybe late last year. He starts games off like a house on fire and then fades just enough to cough it up. Of course, you could say the same about Lincecum and to a lesser extent Vogelsong and Peavy, when he is healthy.

A whole lot of inconsistency wrapped around those Bumgarner and Heston starts. Cain needs to come back with a vengeance and Peavy is going to get the veteran courtesy. Timmy, Timmy and Vogie appear to be fighting for scraps after the walking wounded return.

Hudson pitched a great game through the fifth, but all hell broke loose in the sixth and seventh. Here's how his night ended up: with six and two thirds innings pitched, he gave up five runs on ten hits and one walk, and he struck out six. The final score was: Giants 6, Rockies 8

Giants win on walk-off E1 - It's the "Giants Way"

http://m.mlb.com/video/?content_id=36807385&topic_id=6479266

It's never pretty, but this is the "Giants Way" this season. The bullpen got the train back on the tracks after Huddy was perhaps left in a bit too long and frittered away an early four run lead. Maybe Bochy pushed him a little too far trying to shorten the bullpen assignment or just deferring to the veteran warrior.

This sets things up nicely for the next two, of which the Giants really only MUST win one of two. The Cardinals almost MUST win both. Vogie and Bummer at home give the Gigantes an outside chance at closing things out at home, but we're a long way from that.

Cardinals would have to like their chances even if they go home down 3-2 with the task of beating Peavy and Hudson on consecutive nights. No offense to the way either one has pitched down the stretch, but this is where you miss Matt Cain pitching before or after Bumgarner.

A little overkill on the Gamecast data, but this is a pretty play. Bad-hopper to Pablo, which if it gets by him, puts the Giants in a large 10th inning hole. If he leaves after this season, the Giants will miss plays like this, which Pablo has delivered routinely throughout the year. This one was delivered in the clutch, in prime time, for the whole nation to see. Cha ching!!!

First inning vexing to Hudson once again

Hudson roughed up again in 5-0 Giants loss

Given the way Despaigne dominates the Giants (noted below), this game was effectively over after the first. There doesn't seem to be a lot of fight left in this dog of a team, partly due to injuries, partly due to sporadic episodes of ineptness. We have two starters who can't seem to get anybody out lately, both named Timmy, although Lincecum threw a couple of innings without harm.

from Yahoo Sports:
Hudson roughed up again in 5-0 Giants loss - Yahoo Sports:
"Said manager Bruce Bochy: ''That first inning he just got the ball up. He had two outs there. If he had gotten out of that I think he throws a nice game. The one pitch would have been nice to get before the double. That changed the whole at-bat. After that I thought he settled down. The first inning was tough - get two outs and give up four runs.

''That wasn't the whole story, though. WE couldn't do anything offensively. We had a tough time getting anything going,'' Bochy said."
..

DESPAIGNE DOMINATES
The Padres right-hander improved to 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three starts against San Francisco. He's allowed only one earned run in 20 innings.

This game was a bit of a microcosm of the 2014 Giants season and illustrates in a couple of regards why they have been particularly vexing to fans. Late in the game Kuip and Kruk went all Braves announcer ( tough guy behind the mike ) after Posey got hit by a slider that backed up on R.J. Alvarez, intimating that this would fire up the Giants bench. Are you serious, guys?

Posey got lit up and knocked into next season a while back and I'm still waiting for his teammates to respond to that.

.....didn't have to be exactly like this, but something like it would have been nice

Cubs, White Sox brawl after home-plate collision

This team simply doesn't have the same personality or composition of the 2010 or 2012 teams. It's almost silly to try to impute those characteristics just because the name on the front of the uniforms is the same. Sandoval followed Posey and proceeded to battle a bit, extending the AB by fouling off some tough pitches. The Giants announcers kept pumping the narrative that the bench was fired up at the HBP. Sandoval, duly motivated proceeded to end the AB with a limp fly out to short LF.

So much for that kind of external motivation. And seriously guys, you need that to motivate you at this point in the season? When you're trying to make the Dodger series meaningful? My guess is the Padres makes that series a moot point. Maybe better for this team in that they can then limp through that one and the next one and recharge their batteries for what is sure to be a one game trouncing at the hands of the Pirates. In Pittsburgh.

After watching a game like that the only thing I regret is that apparently the Brewers seem to want to be in the playoffs even less than the Giants. I am with the guys 100% in sentiment, you would like to see some fight in this bunch, the vexing part of the 2014 Giants is, I'm not seeing it.

Giants pitching led to slaughter, two Timmy's and the kiddie corps

Greinke pitches, hits Dodgers past Giants

What else can you say about this one that the score doesn't announce loud and clear? Kemp had three AB's (and three hits I think) before Brandon Crawford had his first AB. Greinke had seemingly more offensive production from his bat than the Giants entire lineup.

from Yahoo Sports:

Greinke pitches, hits Dodgers past Giants - Yahoo Sports:

Greinke (15-8) pitched six scoreless innings and hit his fourth career home run, and the Los Angeles Dodgers romped past the San Francisco Giants 17-0 on Saturday night to build on their lead in the NL West.
''Their lineup's been about as good as it gets in the past couple of months,'' Greinke said of the Giants. ''Usually if I get four or five you get a little comfortable with it, but the way they've been playing, each extra run was appreciated.''
One day after being held to three hits in a 9-0 loss, the Dodgers doubled that output in the first inning against Giants starter Tim Hudson then coasted behind Greinke.

The bright spots may have been Cordier, who not only looked good enough with the control while also throwing near 100 MPH, but also showed a workable secondary pitch (slider?) and Chris Heston who showed a nice arsenal of pitches. Of course by then, both were pitching to the AAA Dodgers for the most part and the Dodgers may have been exhausted the hitting barrage they put on during the first seven.

Bochy absolutely put his son in a very tough spot to start, but Van Slyke just pole-axed his HR. He also put Timmy in a tough spot. Lincecum and Hudson are similar pitching styles and they weren't finished with Huddy when he left. Maybe a different look would have helped. Maybe not.

As always, the good news is this only counts as one loss and maybe the Dodgers pulled some hits forward from today's game. They shouldn't need much with their ace Kershaw on the hill and a chance to drive a stake through the heart at any Giants hopes to win the division title this year.

At least some of the kids got to play. That's always nice. Good to put a face to the name and the stat line. Kickham's ERA is once again stratospheric, I'm not sure where the Giants go with him from here. Cordier and Strickland look like they can make some noise in a future Giants bullpen.

San Francisco Giants closing in on deal with Tim Hudson - ESPN

If the choice is Hudson or Arroyo, put me down for Hudson. The Giants will lead the league in short RHP's for the next two years, but that's OK. Both are dogged competitors with some gas left in the tank .

Good news.

from ESPN:
San Francisco Giants closing in on deal with Tim Hudson - ESPN:

"The Giants could also fill their final rotation spot with Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo is also talking with the Twins, among others.

Hudson spent his first six major league seasons with the A's, who selected him in the sixth round of the 1997 amateur draft out of Auburn.

Oakland traded Hudson to the Braves in December 2004 and he pitched nine seasons in Atlanta. The three-time All-Star earned NL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2010 after he returned from elbow ligament replacement surgery to go 17-9 with a 2.83 ERA. He had back surgery for a herniated disk in November 2011."
