In effect, Theriot replaces Fontenot. Belt and Pill battle in out for spare change. Burris sneaks in there as well and my guy Conor Gillaspie once again appears to be on the outside looking in. The other guys are simply more versatile, if you can make yourself a "two for one" player with versatility, that becomes a deciding factor in deciding final roster spots.
The Giants are carrying a boat-load of pitchers into the season, 12-13 I believe is the reporting, which is a bit of a worrisome sign. Runzler and Surkamp are nursing arm ailments although neither is reported to be serious.
Giants release Mike Fontenot (UPDATED with DL news) | Giants Extra:
"Fontenot, 31, was hitting .278 in 13 games this spring. By releasing him now, the Giants are only on the hook for one-fourth of his contract. The same situation applies to Theriot, who now appears to be guaranteed his full $1.25 million contract.
Fontenot played in 113 games as a Giant and was a contributor during the club’s World Series run in 2010. He made two starts at third base in the 2010 NLCS in place of a struggling Pablo Sandoval, going 2 for 8 with a walk and stolen base.
The move could open up a roster spot for either Brandon Belt or Brett Pill. If the Giants keep only Burriss and Theriot, they will have one additional bench spot. Belt is the better hitter, but Pill has shown that he can play third base, where Fontenot served as one of Sandoval’s primary backups."
