Giants Propsects a little older, maybe a bit better.
Gone from the list, culled for being age 25 or greater and becoming more Suspect than Prospect:
Conor Gillaspie - one of my favorites, will be a great PTBNL for somebody.
Eric Surkamp - Giants have to get one starter out of either him or Dan Runzler. The other, along with Chris Gloor, can battle for LOOGY status.
Chris Domiguez - light tower power, as long as the light towers are nowhere higher that AA.
Ryan Cavan - dropped off the cliff after some good early returns.
The future position players who may see the majors sooner than later:
Gary Brown CF - If we don't sign Josh Hamilton. Noooooooooooooo.......................
Joe Panik 2B - If we lose Marco Scutaro. Noooooooooooooooooo..........................
Andrew Susac C - Tough position to break into with this franchise.
Adam Duvall 3B and Ricky Oropesa 1B - Potential power hitters on the corners. Have to see more at the higher levels before getting too excited.
The future looks bright for a deep and effective bullpen:
Heath Hembree - has all the appearances of a future closer, if his durability hold up.
Mike Kickham - doing good work so far.
Brett Bochy - jokes about nepotism won't fly, this kid looks like he can pitch.
Josh Osich - may be a LOOGY, but so what.
Chris Heston - can really chuck it by people. Has to harness it a bit too move up.
The starters to watch are likely a couple of years away:
Kyle Crick - future top of the rotation potential
Clayton Blackburn - brutally effective.
Jacob Dunnington - has dark horse written all over him, not for long though.
Chris Stratton and Martin Agosta from two years ago
That's ten guys. If half of them come through the franchise is well stocked for many years down the road.
The franchise drafted and developed horribly and paid a price from maybe 2000-2005. Ever since then it seems like there have been productive players from each successive years draft. Here's a trip down memory lane. You can almost see the year 2005, when they had no pick in the first three rounds as a result of the policy of signing aging veterans to surround Barry, as the tipping point in the change in direction for the organization.
Year - Player (Round Drafted):
2000 - Boof Bonser (1) Lance Niekro (2) then crickets
2001 - Brad Hennessey (1) Noah Lowry (1) Todd Linden (1) Jesse Foppert (2) not much productivity for having three first rounders.
2002 - Matt Cain (1) Freddie Lewis (2) in hindsight, maybe a case of even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
2003 - David Aardsma (1) Roger Whitaker (1) Nate Schierholtz (2) again not much for having had two first rounders.
2004 - NO FIRST ROUNDER (WTH) Eddie Martinez-Esteve (2) John Bowker (2) Kevin Frandsen (12) almost a wasted draft.
2005 - NO PICKS FIRST THREE ROUNDS (HEY, WHY NOT) Ben Copeland (4) Daniel Griffin (5) Alex Hinshaw (15) Sergio Romo (28) the blind squirrel theory, if it wasn't for that flyer in the 28th round, another near wasted draft.
Then the seas changed....
2006 - Tim Licecum (1) Manny Burriss (1) Clayton Tanner (3) Brett Pill (7) a good start
2007 - Madison Bumgarner (1) Tim Alderson (1) Wendell Fairley (1) Nick Noonan, Jackson Williams, Charlie Culberson (3 COMP A - sandwich picks) Dan Runzler (9) Now that's what to do with three first rounders.
2008 - Buster Posey (1) Conor Gillaspie (COMP A) Roger Kieschnick (3) Brandon Crawford (4) Eric Surkamp (6) Thank You, Tampa Rays!!!
2009 - Zack Wheeler (1) Tommy Joseph (2) Chris Dominguez (3) Brandon Belt (5) Value used mainly in trades.
2010 - Gary Brown (1) Jarrett Parker (2) Seth Rosin (4) Heath Hembree (5) Mike Kickham (6) Chuckie Jones (7) Adam Duvall (11) Brett Bochy (20)
2011 - Joe Panik (1) Kyle Crick (CA) Andrew Susac (2) Ricky Oropesa (3) Josh Osich (6)
2012 - Chris Stratton (1) Martin Agosta (2)
Heck, if just 1/3 of the guys listed as legit prospects from 2010-12 pan out, things will be looking pretty good for the Gigantes for the next 5-10 years. These guys are going to either be productive players in SF or used as trade bait in deals for productive veterans. The young pitching looks very, very promising in this organization.
